Being unilateral makes me more comfortable to try following a community that might be interesting, because un-following does not effect them. Bilateral friending makes "unfriending" socially awkward & I don't find this with twitter, I can just come & go, maybe decide to check in online sometimes rather than actively follow, its not a big deal. For communities this makes a good way to "broadcast" small amounts of news on a regular basis.
